Wrinkles are caused by the repeated use of certain muscles of facial expression. These lines can be softened by temporarily weakening the muscles using botulinum toxin (BOTOX) This toxin has been used for many yeas to treat over-active muscles (as in the management of squints and nervous ticks) The substance cannot cause any permanent damage, or migrate to other sites, because it attaches itself to the muscle. The action on the muscle is never permanent, thus the treatment has been described as hibernation.
